GETTING STARTED ON YOUR VOCAL DEVELOPMENT.

Hello everyone!  First I must say Happy New Year! It’s a great privilege that we are here and still standing, all thanks to God for his grace and mercy.

I know that some of us have made resolutions relating to our music e.g learning to play an instrument,  taking vocal training lessons etc or if you are at an intermediate level; sharpening your skills to promote effective use. All I want to do here is to give you some steps to help you on your journey to your music/vocal development.

The only excuse for this is if she was singing Listen by Beyoncé. ..lol
My mentor and shepherd (Bishop T.V Adelakun)said if you are going to get anywhere or get anything out of life you need to set goals and have a clear cut vision of where you are headed to. A lot of my friends have asked me what I really wanted to do concerning my music and It really got me thinking about so many things at the same time.
     In your vocal development there are a few pointers to work on;

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SOUND
You need to figure out what you want to sound like or you Let me say find your sound.  One thing to note is whoever it is you look up to vocally has a great way of influencing your sound.  The thing is there are lots of Beyoncés, R Kellys and Mali musics out there so you need to figure out a way to create our own unique sound so that our listeners can easily identify our voices. One of the way to do this is to listen to other people rather than focus our attention on that one artiste we love. A little bit of this and a little bit of that actually makes a whole lot of difference.  For me personally I love listening to people with unique vocals e.g Mali Music,  Kim Burrell both whom I just started listening to recently.  My opinion is after a time of studying those people you have chosen you will begin to have your own distinct sound.  It takes time but you will get there.

LISTEN TO YOURSELF
It is important for you to have a voice recorder with which you can use to record your voice and assess yourself. Most people do not like doing this but it is a must because you cannot lie to yourself and the extent of your growth can be known by doing this using this method and ofcourse this method will not work if you are not doing the things you are supposed to do to aid your vocal development.  I am also sure most of us have access to a voice recorder mostly on your phone which is quite handy.

MENTORING

Having a mentor gives you an advantage because they can tell you by themselves or you can read up on the wrong or right things they did and either do or not do what they did.  Apart from having a non-physical mentor it will be good for you to have a really good singer that you are accountable to  and you can always count on to tell you the truth.
A mentor serves as a template for you to guide you through your vocal development.

Take your time to outline those people you love listening to who probably have a similar voice texture, range and tone to you. Of course you can listen to people who aren’t so similar to you but you admire all you will need to do is be careful not to overwork yourself and try to do what they do in a way that’s comfortable for you. You also need to figure out if you are going for a edgier sound like Christina Aguilera, Jessie J, John Legend or a fuller, softer or cleaner sound  like Jennifer Hudson, Tori Kelly, Usher,Donnie Mcclurkin e.t.c
Get those people’s past and present albums it will help you understand their voices better because you notice that there’s probably a lot of growth and difference between their sound on their first album and probably their 5th Album.  It’s important to not just pay attention to just the runs and riffs alone like most people do nowadays but to the nuances and dynamics of each song and the way the artistes sing on each of the songs.  You also need to figure out what genre or style of music you want to do maybe jazz or r’n b or both although it is better as an artiste for you to be versatile so that you won’t be placed in box  because this tends to limit your audience/listeners.

VOCAL EXERCISES
In this new year, you cannot afford to miss out on your personal rehearsal time if you really want to get better.  You really have to be consistent with it and you can’t afford to be lazy. You probably need to get a vocal coach if you think you need one or follow a simple training course which ofcourse you will probably need to purchase so if you are really serious about it you probably wouldn’t worry too much about the expense but you can still find one that’s within your budget.
You can call me +2347056402060 We can discuss. *winks*

-Set times for your personal rehearsals. probably about 30 minutes per day. 1o minutes for warm ups, 10 minutes on technique practice and another 10 singing songs you have learnt in order to ease your voice into the various techniques you have learnt.
-Be consistent with your vocal work out.
-Listen and learn new things,  do not get stuck in your old ways.  The Internet holds every information you need.  Refresh your music and video library!
I sincerely hope this at least spurs up something in you to get you on the right track. Please do not be discouraged I believe in you!
